How to rotate canvass in Adobe Illustrator CS5
Adobe Illustrator has a unique way of rotating the canvas as opposed to other Adobe products such as InDesign or Photoshop, which require that you rotate the artboard. Illustrator uses what is called a rotating square, which is used to rotate the canvass in any direction.
Once you are done with your work in Illustrator, remember to save your file by going to File > Save or pressing Cmd + S (Mac) or Ctrl + S (PC).
Why you should rotate canvass in Adobe Illustrator
Adobe Illustrator is also known as vector graphics software. Vector graphics are images that define objects using mathematical equations, which enables the file to be resized without losing any quality or resolution since all of the information in a vector graphic is stored in a single coordinate system.
Since you do not need to worry about having the correct dimensions to fit your printer, you can edit your vector graphics at any time. Vector graphics are commonly used for logos and other simple designs that do not require photographic quality images.
When to use rotation for your canvas in Adobe Illustrator
Adobe Illustrator has the ability to rotate your canvass in any direction that you need. You may find that it is easier to rotate the canvass by 90 degrees rather than changing the orientation of your document after it has been created. If you know that you are going to be printing on a standard 8 1/2 x 11 inch piece of paper, you may want to rotate your canvass 90 degrees by selecting Rotate View > 90° CCW or press Cmd + K (Mac) or Ctrl + K (PC) before creating your design.
What the benefits are of rotating the canvas in Adobe Illustrator
If you know that you are going to be printing your design on a standard 8 1/2 x 11 inch piece of paper and the printer at home does not allow for portrait orientation, rotating your canvass before creating your design will save you the time it takes to reformat the document. The rotation square can be found in the lower right hand corner of your artboard.
Conclusion
Adobe Illustrator’s rotating square is a quick and easy way to rotate your canvass in any direction that you need. Remember to save your document before continuing on to the next task, as it will be closed when you start over.
