The Canadian Football League Grey Cup is the championship game of Canada’s top professional football league, and has been played since 1909. The annual event holds a rich history as one of North America’s oldest sporting events still in existence today. With the CFL reaching its 100th anniversary this year, it will be interesting to see what plans they have for future years.

The CFL’s regular season was shortened by 22.2 percent, with 14 games instead of the customary 18. According to CFLdb Statistics, scoring was down 12.6 percent from the previous season, while stated attendance was down 35.3 percent.

The Blue Bombers are captained by quarterback Zach Collaros, who played for four of the CFL’s nine clubs after starring at the University of Cincinnati from 2008 to 2011. At the 2019 CFL trade deadline, Winnipeg acquired him, and he teamed up with Chris Streveler to lead the club to the Grey Cup. He also played four seasons with Hamilton after winning the 2012 Grey Cup with the Toronto Argonauts. In 2021, Collaros was perhaps the finest quarterback in the CFL, leading the league in passing efficiency (111.0) and completing 70.2 percent of his throws for 3,185 yards, 20 touchdowns, and six interceptions. Many of the finest players in the CFL are American imports, but the Blue Bombers have been helped by a Canadian-born tailback. Despite missing half of the season due to a knee injury, veteran RB Andrew Harris finished seventh in the CFL in running yards (623). He had 170 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns in the 2019 Grey Cup, earning him MVP honors. Harris ran for 136 yards and a touchdown in the Western Final, and he’ll be a vital figure to watch on Sunday.

This game has been dubbed the “coronation” of one of the finest CFL teams in decades by several senior CFL watchers. The Blue Bombers have won 16 of their last 23 games dating back to the conclusion of the 2019 regular season. During Steinauer’s media availability on Wednesday, the first thing he was asked was who his starting quarterback was. From an American/NFL standpoint, it’s difficult to say which is more unusual: quarterback uncertainty approaching a championship game or Steinauer actually answering the issue. Hamilton will start Dane Evans, who formerly played at Tulsa and spent the bulk of this season as a backup. In the Eastern Final, Evans took over for Jeremiah Masoli and led the Tiger-Cats back from a 12-0 hole, completing all 16 of his throws. During the regular season, Masoli started nine games while Evans started six.

The fact that the Tiger-Cats are the underdog (+3 at Caesar’s Sportsbook) in Sunday’s game hasn’t set well with them. Hamilton linebacker Simoni Lawrence remarked to reporters this week, “We’re both in it for the same goal. It’s a tough game, and anybody who enters believing they’re playing against an underdog will be quickly duped out of their seat. We’re all professional athletes, in my opinion. Nobody goes into a game believing they’re going to be the underdog. We’ve come here to compete at a top level, and we’re ready to do so.”

Injuries have hampered him in 2021, and at 34, he has slowed down a little. Despite this, he caught 44 receptions for 474 yards in ten games this season.
