5 things to know about poppers

Sarah Jacobson 3 min read

The majority of people who use poppers do so on a regular basis. Some of them are already addicted and won’t have sex unless they have them. Poppers are liquid drugs that make you feel high right away after you breathe them in. Amyl nitrate, butyl nitrite, and liquid gold are some other names that are often used. The effects start to show up quickly after inhalation. They include feeling warm, dizzy, having headaches, and having a faster heart rate. People use poppers as recreational drugs a lot because they make you feel good and relax the muscles in your anus, which makes sex better. Some manufacturers sell them as leather cleaners and room deodorizers, but people don’t often use them for those things. The effects are strong, but they don’t last long. Here are five more things you might not have known about poppers.

Why they called poppers

People named them poppers UK from the small glass capsules that contained amyl nitrite. Initially, producers supplied the drug to treat angina and the users had to pop the capsules around their nose and sniff the amyl nitrite. The users named the capsule bottles poppers due to the sound they produced when opened or crushed.

How they can be used incorrectly

Excessive or incorrect use of poppers can harm your health. You should never allow the liquid to get into contact with your skin because nitrite inhalants are toxic. If that happens, they may cause yellow and crusty skin irritations, particularly around your genitals, lips and nose.

If you have blood pressure problems or higher body temperatures, you should not use poppers. Poppers are known to reduce the supply of oxygen to major body organs. They can destroy your red blood cells and cause death. Above all, you should never combine poppers with Viagra or swallow them because they can stop the functioning of your heart leading to death. Moreover, you should never mix them with alcohol because that will heighten the unconsciousness risk.

Why they are popular

The popularity of poppers is high among gay men. When sniffed, they can dilate the blood vessels and reduce the blood pressure so that more blood reaches the user’s heart. Furthermore, they help the circulation of blood to the user’s heart, increase the heartbeat and relax the soft muscles. That intensifies pleasure sensation and the effects can last for 2-5 minutes.

Other people use poppers as pleasure intensifier when dancing or having sex. Because the drugs help relax the soft muscles, including the anal sphincter muscles, users are able to have easier and painless anal sex. Poppers also prolong orgasms and provide harder erections. That has made many people start searching for them.

What are the side effects

Nitrites are reported to boost the sexual desire and libido of the user; they can be detrimental to the safe-sex activities. The other effects differ from one user to the other because some people report reduced premature ejaculation and others report difficulties in achieving an erection. Some clinical studies have reported that the most popular side effects of poppers include headaches, mild congestion and sweating.

Some countries that have banned poppers

Unfortunately, some countries prohibit the use of poppers for sale. One of the countries that tried to ban the use more recently is the UK but some users are still buying them from online stores. In the United States, the users require a doctor’s prescription to start using the poppers because of the public worries about the increased recreational use and the health of users. In Canada, the user of poppers is not allowed and sale without authorization is punishable by imprisonment and fines.
